You've saved a thousand articles on how to study better. You've watched the YouTube videos, downloaded the apps, and bought the courses. Yet somehow, you're still stuck in the same place, staring at your screen, wondering why none of it works.

I get it. I've been there too. As someone who writes about learning and information management, I've seen countless people—including myself—fall into this trap. We treat study methods like recipes: mix the right ingredients, follow the steps, and you'll get a perfect result. But learning doesn't work that way, especially in distance education where you're on your own.

Why 'Best Practices' Fail You

The most common question I receive is: "I tried your method, but it doesn't feel right." That's because most advice is context-blind. It assumes you're working in a stable field with a certain level of expertise, but your reality might be completely different.

Take the advice to read books instead of browsing the web. A historian might tell you that systematic books are superior to fragmented online sources. And for her, that's true. But ask someone in artificial intelligence, and they'll laugh. The field moves so fast that by the time a book goes through editing and printing, the code inside is already outdated. For them, the best information is the latest paper, the newest blog post, or a discussion in an open-source community.

The lesson? It's not about what's objectively better; it's about what fits your field's information timeliness. In distance education, you might be studying computer science or history—each demands a different approach.

Are You a Novice or an Expert?

Another reason methods fail is that they don't account for your skill level. When I first started studying a new subject, I read every page of every book. I was terrified of missing something. That's normal for a beginner.

But after a while, I realized that same approach was holding me back. To write a paper on a specific topic, I only needed a chapter or two from a book, but I felt guilty if I didn't read the whole thing. That's when I understood: the same content demands different handling depths depending on your knowledge. A beginner needs the full picture; an expert can jump straight to what's relevant.

This is especially true in distance learning, where you're often juggling multiple courses and need to prioritize. Don't force yourself to read everything cover-to-cover if you already know the basics.

The Hidden Assumptions Behind Every Method

Ever wondered why two experts give opposite advice? For example, the famous sociologist Niklas Luhmann said you can put anything into his card box system. Another author, Scott Scheper, says only refined thoughts belong there. Who's right?

They both are. Luhmann was a top researcher whose whole life revolved around academic work. When he said "anything," he assumed you, too, have a brilliant academic brain that automatically filters out trivial stuff. Scheper, writing for a broader audience, had to make that hidden assumption explicit: put only your best ideas in.

Every method has its creator's unspoken assumptions. GTD was designed for executives drowning in tasks. PARA was built for digital entrepreneurs whose work is project-based. If your life doesn't match that complexity, these systems feel clunky.

Extract the Principle, Not the Form

So what do you do? You can't just copy a method wholesale. Instead, break it down to its core principles and test them in your own context.

Take the card box method. Strip away the physical cards, the numbering systems, the fancy software. What's left? Two ideas: each thought should be a standalone unit, and thoughts should be linked to form a network. That's it. Whether you use paper, Obsidian, or a notebook, the principle stays the same.

Three Questions to Ask Before Trying Any Method

Here's a simple framework to evaluate any study technique you come across:

  • What field is this method designed for? Is it for a fast-changing field where you need the latest info, or a stable one where fundamentals matter?
  • Who is it meant for? Is the method aimed at beginners who need a broad foundation, or experts solving specific problems? Where are you now?
  • What problem was the creator trying to solve? Think about their work style, their life, and what they took for granted. Does that match your situation?

These questions take two minutes, but they can save you hours of frustration.

Test It with a Tiny Experiment

Instead of overhauling your entire study system, run a small experiment. Let me give you a concrete example.

Meet Xiao Wang. He wanted to learn about habit formation. He read a few books, but the concepts got jumbled in his head. He couldn't explain them to anyone. So he set a specific goal: write a blog post explaining ten core concepts clearly, using flashcards for practice.

He used Anki, a spaced repetition app, to create 50 cards over ten days. At the end, he reviewed what worked. The flashcards themselves were boring, but the act of writing them—summarizing ideas in his own words, thinking of good questions—made the concepts stick.

He didn't become a devoted Anki user, but he adopted one thing: turn what you learn into your own questions. That simple step became his standard for every new topic.

Your Own System, Not Someone Else's

The goal isn't to follow someone else's method perfectly. It's to build your own system, piece by piece, by testing what works for you. Don't be afraid to discard parts that don't fit. Keep the core idea, adapt it to your context, and move on.

So the next time you see a "revolutionary" study method, resist the urge to bookmark it and move on. Ask yourself the three questions. Run a small experiment. And remember: the best method is the one you'll actually use.
